Frame of mind

BOXCAR SOCIAL LANEWAY

It’s a communication between the artist and substrate. That is always how I see it. I need to talk to the wall, see what it wants to express before I respond with paint

For me it’s like playing. I start with pencil sketches and work in the colours using the same exterior latex I intend on using in the mural. It’s a game to see what works and what doesn’t

Then I free-hand it onto the wall

The conversation

Often I find it’s between the texture of the surface and the design. Something you don’t need to think about when painting on canvas. I loved the contrast of the brick upper half versus the bottom smooth half. You can see this most notably on the moustache.

I wanted to celebrate the everyday hardworking person. Perhaps someone who gathered the coffee beans for this coffee shop.

As you may know about me. I am addicted to risk. When it get’s close to the end of a painting I start playing again. I allow curiosity to run the show. In this case - I couldn’t ignore the bricked-in-window that once was.

This is the conversation between the architecture of a space and the design that is painted on it.

I think about.. what does the window want to see. And is this a window into the workers mind? What is he thinking while he works?

What do you think about while you work?
